최근, 교회 안팎에서 들려오는 목회자의 추락 소식은 공동체 전체의 신뢰를 무너뜨리는 영적 붕괴의 도화선이 되고 있다. 오늘날 목회자를 향한 맹목적인 순종에서 벗어나, 목회자에 대한 본질적인 인식 전환을 가져보자.
현대 예배에서, 일부 목회자들은 자신의 역할을 구약 시대 하나님이 택하신 권위로 끌어올려, 공동체에 대한 지배적 수단으로 이용하려는 경향이 있다. 그러나 목회자는, 만인 제사장의 신학적 원리를 기반으로 한 기독교 공동체 안에서, 예배와 예식을 집행하고 성도를 양육하는 직분을 맡은 '양'으로서의 존재이지, '목자'로서 군림하는 존재가 아니다.
만일 목회자가 교회 내에서 '목자'로 인식되고 있다면, 그 공동체는 병든 것이며, 그 목회자는 주님 앞에 책망받을 자임이 분명하다. 마틴 루터의 "교황, 사제, 군주, 농부 등 모든 그리스도인들은 참으로 영적 신분의 보유자들이요, 직분에 관한 것을 제외하고는 그들 사이에 차이가 없다"는 신학적 선언에도 불구하고, 일부 목회자들은 여전히 그릇된 행실과 태도를 고수하고 있다.
친구에게서 전화가 걸려왔다. 친구는 깊은 한숨을 내쉬며 또 한 명의 목회자가 추락한 사연을 읊어준다. 그 목회자는 친구가 믿음을 견인하는 데 큰 영향을 끼친 인물이었다. 친구뿐 아니라, 그를 따르던 많은 믿음의 사람들의 속상한 마음과 탄식이 고스란히 느껴진다. 공동체 안의 수많은 영혼의 메마른 마음을 복음의 단비로 적셔주던 목회자의 설교는 깊은 신뢰를 안겨주었기에, 그 붕괴는 신앙의 뿌리마저 흔들고 있다.

신앙의 상처로 믿음 생활을 져버렸던 친구의 어머님을, 오랜 시간 공들여 교회에 모시고 왔다. 어느 날, 목사님의 차 뒷좌석에 어머님을 모시고 이동하던 중, 옆 차선의 차량이 갑자기 끼어들었다. 이에 목사님은 "저런 자식은 본때를 보여줘야 한다"며, 고속도로에서 카레이싱을 시전하기 시작했다. 이후, 어머님은 목사님의 그런 행동에 치가 떨린다며, 결국 교회에 발길을 끊으셨다.
교회 형님과 함께 노숙자를 전도하게 되었다. 우리는 그 노숙자와 함께 수요예배의 문을 열며, 오늘 이 영혼의 회심이 하나님과 천사들 앞에 기쁨이 된다는 생각에 감격하며 예배에 참석했다. 노숙자를 향한 주님의 긍휼과 자비를 기대했던 형님은, 노숙자를 향한 목회자의 냉담한 시선과 태도에 마음의 상처를 입었고, 회복까지 긴 시간의 아픔을 견뎌야 했다. 많은 신자들이 목회자에게 존경과 영적 의지함을 품지만, 어느 순간 목회자의 가리었던 결핍의 가시가 드러나면서 상처를 받고 교회를 떠나는 이들을 종종 목격하게 된다.
그런가 하면, 현장에서 만난 신학생 중 한 학생은 희망하던 대학에 떨어지자, 신자인 부모님의 결정으로 신학대학에 진학하게 되었다고 한다. 또 어떤 학생은 정신적 장애를 앓고 있는데, 부모가 "신학대학에 다니면서 치유받고 목회하면 안정적이지 않을까"하는 마음으로 입학시킨 경우도 있었다. 나는 이들을 위하여, 4년의 학업 동안 성령의 은혜와 자비 속에서 회심을 통한 소명의 길이 열리기를 기도할 뿐이었다.
Recently, news of pastors falling -- heard from inside and outside the church -- has become the fuse of a spiritual collapse that shatters the trust of entire communities. Let us move beyond blind obedience toward pastors today and pursue an essential shift in how we perceive them.
In modern worship, some pastors tend to elevate their role to the authority of those chosen by God in the Old Testament era, and to use it as a means of dominating the community. However, within a Christian community grounded in the theological principle of the priesthood of all believers, a pastor is one of the "sheep" entrusted with the office of conducting worship and rites and nurturing the saints -- not a "shepherd" who reigns over them. If a pastor is perceived as a "shepherd" within the church, that community is sick, and that pastor will surely be rebuked before the Lord. Despite Martin Luther's theological declaration that "Pope, priest, prince, peasant, and all Christians are truly of the spiritual estate, and there is no difference among them except in office," some pastors still cling to wrong conduct and attitudes.
A friend called me. With a deep sigh, he recounted the story of yet another pastor who had fallen. That pastor had been a person of great influence in carrying my friend's faith. I could feel, intact, the heartache and lamentation not only of my friend but of the many people of faith who had followed him. Because the pastor's preaching, which had moistened the parched hearts of countless souls in the community with the gentle rain of the gospel, had inspired such deep trust, his collapse shakes even the very roots of faith.

I had spent a long time gently persuading my friend's mother -- who had given up her life of faith due to wounds inflicted in church -- to come back to church. One day, while she was riding in the back seat of the pastor's car with us, a car from the next lane suddenly cut in. At this, the pastor said, "A guy like that needs to be taught a lesson," and began racing him on the highway. Afterward, my friend's mother said her teeth chattered at the pastor's behavior, and in the end she stopped attending church altogether.
An older brother from church and I once evangelized a homeless man. We opened the door of Wednesday service together with him, attending worship deeply moved by the thought that the conversion of this soul today would be a joy before God and the angels. The brother, who had been expecting the Lord's compassion and mercy toward the homeless man, was wounded by the cold gaze and attitude of the pastor toward him, and had to endure a long time of pain before he recovered. Many believers hold their pastors in respect and lean on them spiritually, but the moment a pastor's hidden thorn of inadequacy is exposed, we often witness those who are wounded and leave the church.
Then again, among the seminarians I have met in the field, one student told me that after failing to enter the university he had hoped for, his believing parents decided he should attend seminary. Another student suffers from a mental disability, and his parents enrolled him with the thought, "Wouldn't it be more stable if he were healed while attending seminary and then went into ministry?" For these students, all I could do was pray that, during their four years of study, the path of calling through conversion would open under the grace and mercy of the Holy Spirit.
교회가 수십 가정만 확보해도, 적지 않은 십일조와 각종 헌금이 정기적으로 들어온다. 면세 혜택에 사회적 통제도 느슨하다 보니, 삶 전체를 하나님께 헌신하려는 소명 의식이 아니라, 목회를 하나의 비즈니스로 선택하는 사례가 점점 늘고 있다. 현대판 성직 매매가 공공연히 이루어지고, 장로 임직 헌금을 위해 대출까지 고민하는 현실은 중세 교회의 부패와 도덕적 타락을 연상케 한다.
이는 단순한 안타까움을 넘어, 깊은 분노와 슬픔을 자아낸다. 교단의 선거에서는 정치권 못지않은 불법 선거자금이 오가고, 6개월 속성으로 목사 자격을 취득할 수 있다는 광고까지 등장하는 등, 여러 사회적 이슈로 인해 하나님의 나라는 몸살을 앓고 있으며, 그 빛은 점점 생명을 잃어간다. 국민의 생명을 책임지는 의료 종사자에게 법적 통제가 이루어지듯, 국민의 영적 회복을 이끄는 목회자에게도 적절한 사회적 통제가 이루어질 수 있는 지혜가 모이길 기도한다.

인식의 전환이 필요하다. 목회자는 신학의 기반 위에 인격적 소양으로 세워지는 존재일까? 어려서부터 목회자의 비전을 품고, 성령 안에서 인격이 다듬어지고, 갈라디아서의 열매를 통해 세워지는 목회자가 과연 얼마나 되겠는가. 목회자도 자신의 결핍이 타인의 영혼을 흔들고 있음을 자각하는 순간, 십자가 앞에서 자신을 내려놓고, 부르심의 무게를 감당하기 위해 고통 속에서 몸부림치는 존재가 된다. 이런 여정을 통해 그 또한 하나님의 손길 아래, 토기처럼 깍이고 다듬어져 간다.
앞선 사례를 보자면 통제 욕구와 자기중심성이 강하다 보니, 매너 없이 끼어드는 차량이 도무지 용서가 되지 않는 것이다. 개척교회에 재정적 기반이 될 만한 신자가 없어, 이번 달 월세조차 밀리는 가운데, 허름하고 냄새나는 노숙자가 교회 문턱을 밟으니, 표정 관리가 되지 않는 것이다. 유명 목회자의 스캔들로 교계가 웅성웅성하다. 외로우셨구나. 하나님의 큰 은혜와 축복 가운데 세계를 다니며 복음을 외치는 분이지만, 그분의 가슴에 사람의 온기로 채워져야 할 그것에 목마르셨구나.
두 사람의 사랑이라면, 만인의 지탄을 받아 그 달콤함의 댓가를 지불하면 될 것이고, 위력에 의한 폭력이면, 법의 집행을 통해 죄의 무게를 달아야 할 것이다. 우리가 경계할 목회자는 부르심에 무게를 견디며 몸부림치는 자가 아니다. 회개하고, 다시 일어나, 자기 자신을 십자가에 못 박으며 믿음 가운데 살고자 몸부림치는 자는 더더욱 아니다. 자신의 죄에 무감각해진 자, 죄의 자리를 벗어나지 않고 그것을 합리화하는 자, 소명의식이 아닌 직업의식으로 세속적 기회를 엿보는 자—이런 목회자들을 우리는 경계해야 한다. 노숙자로 인해 목회자에 대한 불신이 생긴 심기 불편한 형님을 찾아갔다.
"형님, 목회자의 결핍을 품고 함께 하나님 앞에 나아갑시다. 그것이 교회의 유익이요, 복음의 열매입니다. 함께 이겨냅시다."
목회자의 결핍을 정죄하기보단, 우선 그 결핍의 부족함을 자신의 풍성함으로 흘려보내 공동체의 완성을 이루어가도록 노력하자. 이런 노력에도, 공동체가 신앙의 반석 위에 세워지지 않는다면, 기도하며 성령님의 인도하심을 받아보자.
후대여, 목회자의 그림자 아래 머무는 신앙은 영적 안정감을 주는 듯하지만, 그늘은 빛을 가린다. 하나님을 향한 갈망은 타인의 믿음으로 채워질 수 없으며, 믿음은 결국 홀로 하나님 앞에 서는 용기에서 자란다. 후대여, 자기 효능감을 높이자. 이는 당신을 목회자의 그림자에 머물지 않게 한다. 우리 믿음의 여정은 그 발걸음을 통해 은총의 손길을 이끌고, 자신 안의 확신으로 그분의 숨결에 닿는다. 이것이 당신과 나의 믿음이며, 우리의 자유다.
Even when a church secures only a few dozen households, no small amount of tithes and various offerings come in regularly. With tax-exempt benefits and loose social oversight, cases are increasing in which ministry is chosen as a kind of business -- not out of a sense of calling to devote one's whole life to God. The fact that modern-day simony is practiced openly, and that people even consider taking out loans to pay the offering required for elder ordination, calls to mind the corruption and moral decay of the medieval church.
This goes beyond mere sorrow, stirring up deep anger and grief. In denominational elections, illegal campaign funds change hands no less than in politics, and advertisements have even appeared promising that one can obtain pastoral credentials in a six-month crash course. Owing to such social issues, the kingdom of God is groaning, and its light is steadily losing life. Just as legal oversight is exercised over medical professionals who are responsible for the lives of citizens, I pray that wisdom may be gathered so that proper social oversight can also be exercised over pastors who lead the spiritual restoration of citizens.

A shift in perception is needed. Is a pastor someone built upon the foundation of theology with personal character? How many pastors are there who have carried the vision of pastoral ministry from a young age, whose character has been refined within the Holy Spirit, and who have been built up through the fruit of Galatians? The moment a pastor too realizes that his own inadequacy is shaking the souls of others, he becomes one who lays himself down before the cross and writhes in pain to bear the weight of his calling. Through such a journey, he too is chiseled and shaped under the hand of God, like clay.
Looking at the earlier examples, because the desire for control and self-centeredness was strong, a car cutting in without manners simply could not be forgiven. With no believer in the church plant capable of providing a financial foundation, and even this month's rent overdue, when a shabby, foul-smelling homeless man crossed the church threshold, the pastor's expression could not be managed. The Christian world is buzzing over the scandal of a famous pastor. He must have been lonely. Although he is one who travels the world proclaiming the gospel under God's great grace and blessing, he must have thirsted for that place in his heart that should have been filled with human warmth.
If it was love between two people, he should pay the price for that sweetness by enduring everyone's reproach; if it was violence by force, the weight of the sin should be measured through the enforcement of law. The pastors we should be wary of are not those who writhe under the weight of their calling. Even less are they those who repent, rise again, crucify themselves, and writhe to live in faith. Those we must be wary of are the ones who have become numb to their own sin, who do not depart from the place of sin but rationalize it, who chase secular opportunities with an occupational mindset rather than a sense of calling. I went to see the older brother who had grown uneasy and distrustful of pastors because of the homeless man.
"Brother, let us embrace the pastor's inadequacy and go before God together. That is the benefit of the church and the fruit of the gospel. Let us overcome together."
Rather than condemning a pastor's inadequacy, let us first strive to let our own abundance flow over to fill what is lacking in him, and so move toward the completion of the community. If, even with such efforts, the community is not built upon the rock of faith, let us pray and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
To the next generation: a faith that lingers under the shadow of a pastor may seem to give spiritual security, but a shadow blocks the light. The longing for God cannot be filled by another's faith, and faith ultimately grows from the courage to stand alone before God. To the next generation: raise your sense of self-efficacy. This will keep you from remaining in the shadow of a pastor. Our journey of faith, through each step, draws the hand of grace, and through the conviction within us we touch His breath. This is your faith and mine, and this is our freedom.
