종교는 인간의 삶과 죽음, 존재의 의미를 해석하고 안내하는 역할을 한다. 특히 기독교는 전도와 선교를 핵심 사명으로 삼는다는 점에서, 타 종교와 뚜렷한 차이를 보인다. 기독교는 구원을 선포하고, 타 종교는 구원을 탐구한다.
개척교회든 대형교회든, 교회를 유지하기 위한 제반 비용은 결국 성도의 헌금에서 나온다. 전기세, 임대료, 사역비, 교육비, 그리고 목회자의 생활비까지, 교회는 영적인 공동체이지만, 동시에 물리적 공간이며 운영체계다. 모 교회는 예배당을 짓기 위해 수십억의 대출을 감당하고, 그 빚을 갚기 위해 헌금을 작정하고 전도 프로그램을 돌린다. 그렇다. 전도는 영혼 구원의 통로이면서도, 교회 생존의 숨구멍이기도 하다.
이런 현실 속에서, 혹자의 말처럼, 목회자의 전도는 때로는 갈급함의 이름으로, 때로는 책임의 무게로, 때로는 사명의 불꽃으로 이루어진다. 어떤 날은 눈물로, 어떤 날은 계산기로, 어떤 날은 기도로 전도지를 접는다. 예배 시간, 하나님의 사랑은 십자가에서 절정을 이루었고, 교인들은 그 사랑을 전하기 위해 예배 후 주변 아파트를 돌며, 초인종을 누른다. 순간, 등 떠밀려 나온 심정으로 이리저리 다니며 '부흥'이라는 기치 아래 전도하는 것이 과연 하나님의 사랑을 전하는 것일까, 아니면 목회자의 기대를 충족시키기 위해 움직이는 것은 아닐까? 한두 집 초인종을 누르다 답답한 마음을 달래려, 비상구 계단에 앉아 기도한다.
"성령님, 복음의 지혜 주셔서 감사합니다. 오늘 저의 답답한 마음 아시니, 전도에 대한 지혜의 은총도 내려주세요."

모 교회의 청년대학부 강사로 초청을 받았다. 간단한 소개를 마친 뒤, '믿음의 삶'에 대해 궁금한 점을 질문해 보라고 했다. 한 학생이 질문을 한다.
"어떻게 하면 복음을 잘 전할 수 있나요?"
믿음의 걸음마 시절, 전도 중 상심한 마음을 안고 아파트 비상구 계단에 앉아 기도한 후, 성령님께서 지혜와 말씀을 주셨다. 그 은혜의 비밀을 오늘 말씀의 첫머리에 담아 전하기로 했다.
"아무것도 하지 마라! 그럼, 잘 전할 수 있다."
순간 몇몇 학생들이 "이건 뭐지?"라는 어리둥절한 표정을 짓는다.
"내 신앙의 삶은 수년 밖에 안된다. 하나님을 만난 이후, 나는 성경을 읽기 시작했다. 그 가운데 인상적이었던 것은 '행동하라'는 말씀보다 '기다리라'는 주님의 말씀이었다. 나는 '기다리라'는 말씀을 지키기 위해 노력했다. 쉽지 않았지만, 노력했고, 내 삶 속에 실천하며 적용했다. 그러자 성령의 인도하심과 역사하심이 하나둘 나타나기 시작했고, 그 여정 가운데 오늘 나는 여러분 앞에 서게 되었다. 다시 말한다. 기다려라. 여러분의 마음이 하나님의 심장으로 타오를 때까지 가만히 있어라."
예수께서 제자들을 선택하시고 공생애 기간, 제자들에게 '행동하라'는 말씀보다 '기다리라'는 말씀으로 제자들의 행동을 자제시키셨다. 십자가의 대속과 부활 이후, 제자들과 함께하시며 승천하시기까지 마지막 순간에 이르러, 그들에게 당부하신 한 말씀이 있다. 예수께서 제자들에게 "모든 민족으로 제자를 삼고, 땅 끝까지 이르러 증인의 사명을 감당하리라" 말씀하시되 당신께서 성령으로 함께하며 인도하실 때까지 기다리라는 당부의 말씀이시다.

Religion plays the role of interpreting and guiding human life, death, and the meaning of existence. Christianity, in particular, stands distinctly apart from other religions in that it holds evangelism and missions as its core calling. Christianity proclaims salvation; other religions seek after it.
Whether a church plant or a megachurch, the costs of keeping a church running ultimately come from the offerings of the saints. Electricity bills, rent, ministry expenses, education costs, and even the pastor's living expenses -- the church is a spiritual community, yet at the same time a physical space and an operating system. A certain church takes on billions of won in loans to build its sanctuary, and to repay that debt it pledges offerings and runs evangelism programs. Yes, evangelism is both a channel for the salvation of souls and a breathing hole for the church's survival.
In such a reality, as some have said, a pastor's evangelism is sometimes carried out in the name of longing, sometimes under the weight of responsibility, and sometimes as a flame of calling. Some days the tracts are folded with tears, some days with a calculator, some days with prayer. During worship, God's love reached its climax on the cross, and the members go out after the service to surrounding apartments, ringing doorbells to spread that love. In that moment, walking around with the feeling of being pushed out the door, evangelizing under the banner of "revival" -- is it really sharing the love of God, or is it moving to satisfy the pastor's expectations? After ringing one or two doorbells, to soothe a stifled heart, one sits down on the emergency stairwell to pray.
"Holy Spirit, thank You for granting the wisdom of the gospel. You know my stifled heart today, so please pour down upon me the grace of wisdom for evangelism as well."

I was invited to speak at a certain church's college and young adults ministry. After a brief introduction, I asked them to bring up any questions they had about "the life of faith." One student asked.
"How can I share the gospel well?"
Back when I was just learning to walk in faith, after sitting on the emergency stairwell of an apartment, heart-broken from evangelism and praying, the Holy Spirit gave me wisdom and the Word. I decided to share that secret of grace at the very beginning of today's message.
"Do nothing! Then you will share it well."
For a moment, several students wore puzzled expressions, as if to say, "What is this?"
"My life of faith has only spanned a few years. After meeting God, I began reading the Bible. Among the things that struck me, more impressive than the words 'take action' was the Lord's word 'wait.' I tried hard to keep that word, 'wait.' It was not easy, but I tried, and applied it in practice in my life. Then the leading and working of the Holy Spirit began to appear one by one, and on that journey, today I stand before you. I say it again. Wait. Stay still until your heart burns with God's heart."
When Jesus chose His disciples and walked through His public ministry, He restrained their action with the word "wait" rather than "act." After the substitutionary atonement of the cross and the resurrection, while He remained with them until the moment of His ascension, there is one word He pressed upon them. Jesus told the disciples, "Make disciples of all nations and go to the ends of the earth to fulfill the mission of being witnesses," yet He charged them to wait until He Himself, by the Holy Spirit, would walk with and lead them.
If you apply new-customer acquisition strategies, branding plans to make the church known, small-group centered relationship building, target segmentation and promotions, it will surely be of great help in drawing new believers from the surrounding area into the church. But if what you truly desire is biblical evangelism in which the Holy Spirit works and accomplishes, first stop and be still. Take the heart of God. Then in your life the astonishing drama of Acts 29 will unfold.

어느 밤, 꿈속에서 일어난 일이다. 한옥 식당 앞에 조선시대 왕의 어명을 전하는 사자(使者)가 나타나 "○○○는 나와서 왕의 명을 받으라!"고 외쳤다. 밖으로 나가자 그는 내게 커다란 뚝배기를 건넸고, 나는 방 한편 상에 앉아 그 안의 음식을 먹기 시작했다. 너무 맛있어서 정신없이 먹던 중, 갑자기 '펑' 소리와 함께 뚝배기가 A3 크기의 책으로 변했다. 무슨 책인가 싶어 펼쳐 읽어 내려가니, 그 안에는 '하나님의 사랑'이 가득 담겨 있었다. 나는 그분의 사랑 충만한 마음에 깊이 감복되어 엉엉 울기 시작했고, 그러다 꿈에서 깨어났다.
어느 날, 오랜만에 집에서 쉬며 TV를 보던 중이었다. 중동 지역 다큐멘터리에서, 어린 형제가 광야에서 풀을 뜯어, 동굴 안에서 냄비에 끓여 먹는 장면이 나왔다. 순간, 내 심장이 두근거리며 터질 듯 요동쳤다. 나는 그것이 병리적인 증상이 아니라, 하나님의 마음이 내 심장 깊은 곳에서 울리는 영적 증상이라는 사실을 깨달았다.
"하나님, 알겠습니다. 당신의 후대를 향한 마음을 알겠으니 이제 진정하세요."
나는 요동치는 심장을 부여잡고, 하나님을 달래기 시작했다. 그러나 심장은 계속 요동쳤고, 결국 '이러다 죽겠다'는 생각이 들어 집 밖으로 뛰쳐나가 벤치에 앉아, 하나님께 말씀드렸다.
"하나님, 제가 후대를 위해 하나님 살아 계심을 전할게요. 예수를 믿는 자에게 성령으로 함께하시며 역사하신다는 복음을 전할게요."
나는 십보라가 차돌을 취하여 아들의 양피를 베어 여호와 앞에서 모세를 살린 것처럼, 벤치 앞에 있는 풀을 뜯어 입에 넣었다. 우걱우걱 씹으며 삼키려 했지만, 내 목은 쉽게 그것을 허락하지 않는다.
"하나님, 오늘 이 일을 잊지 않기 위해 제가 풀을 씹어 먹고 있어요. 제가 기억할게요. 노력할게요."
그 순간, 내 심장은 다시 정상으로 돌아왔고, 나는 잠 못 이루는 밤을 보내고 다시 일상으로 돌아갔다. 이후, 나는 마귀의 우는 사자 같은 부르짖음 속에서 사방으로 우겨쌈을 당하며 오늘에 이르렀다. 그 가운데 외침의 약속은 점점 잊혀졌고, 하나님의 심장은 서서히 식어가고 있었다.

후대여, 복음을 전하는 일에 쓰임 받고 싶은가? 성령과 함께 동행하며 복음을 전하던 빌립처럼, 천사를 통해 구원받을 이를 인도받는 그런 선지자적 사명을 갈망하는가? 바울처럼 하나님 나라를 위해 고난의 길을 마다하지 않고, 그 길을 끝까지 걸어가려는가? 그렇다면, 지금 기도의 무릎을 꿇고 주의 말씀을 펼쳐보자.
"주여, 나에게 주의 말씀을 통해 하나님의 심장을 가지게 하소서."
하나님의 말씀이 살아서, 운동하여 당신의 심령에 거룩한 은총의 검으로 임할 것이다.

One night, this happened in a dream. In front of a hanok restaurant, a messenger delivering the king's command from the Joseon era appeared and shouted, "○○○, come out and receive the king's order!" When I went outside, he handed me a large earthenware pot, and I sat at a table in one corner of the room and began to eat the food inside it. It was so delicious that I ate without restraint, and then suddenly, with a "pop," the pot transformed into an A3-sized book. Wondering what kind of book it was, I opened it and began to read, and inside it was filled with "the love of God." I was so deeply moved by His love-filled heart that I began to weep aloud, and then I woke up from the dream.
One day, while resting at home for the first time in a long while and watching TV, a Middle East documentary showed a scene of young brothers in the wilderness gathering grass and boiling it in a pot inside a cave to eat. In that moment, my heart began to pound and throb as if it would burst. I realized that this was not a pathological symptom but a spiritual one -- the heart of God resonating from deep within mine.
"God, I understand. I understand Your heart toward the next generation, so please calm down now."
Clutching my pounding heart, I began to soothe God. But my heart kept pounding, and finally, thinking, "I'm going to die at this rate," I rushed out of the house, sat down on a bench, and spoke to God.
"God, I will tell the next generation that You are alive. I will preach the gospel that to those who believe in Jesus, You walk with them and work in them by the Holy Spirit."
Just as Zipporah took a flint and cut off her son's foreskin, saving Moses before the LORD, I plucked the grass in front of the bench and put it in my mouth. I chewed and chewed, trying to swallow, but my throat would not easily allow it.
"God, I am chewing and eating this grass so that I will not forget what happened today. I will remember. I will try."
In that moment, my heart returned to normal, and after a sleepless night, I returned to daily life. Since then, amid the roaring of the devil like a lion, I have been pressed in on every side until today. In the midst of it, the promise of the cry was gradually forgotten, and the heart of God was slowly growing cold within me.

O next generation, do you wish to be used in the work of preaching the gospel? Like Philip, who walked together with the Holy Spirit and proclaimed the gospel, do you long for that prophetic calling of being led by an angel to one who would be saved? Like Paul, will you not refuse the path of suffering for the kingdom of God, and walk that path to the very end? If so, kneel now in prayer and open the Word of the Lord.
"Lord, grant that through Your Word I may have the heart of God."
The Word of God will come alive and active, descending upon your soul as a holy sword of grace.
