교인들의 복음역량 강화를 위해, 소문난 프로그램이 나올 때마다 목회자 권유에 따라 집회나 훈련에 참여했으며, 선교 단체의 훈련 프로그램에도 참여한 경험이 있다. 모두 예수님의 가르침을 따라 신앙을 실천하며, 성숙한 그리스도인의 삶을 살아가도록 돕는 훈련이다. 다만, 말씀 묵상과 기도에 특화되었거나, 전도와 선교에 집중된 훈련 등 저마다의 차별성을 가지고 있다.

각 사역 공동체는 본인들과 함께 활동하는 것이 하나님의 시대적 부르심에 대한 선택이며 소명이라는 점을 공통적으로 강조한다. 구성원의 소속감을 높이기 위해 사역에 대한 확신을 강조하는 것은 이해 가능한 일이지만, 그 강조가 지나치면 자부심을 넘어서 우리 단체만이 시대적 부르심을 받았다는 교만과 우월성에 매몰되는 오류를 범할 수 있다.

나는 말씀을 전할 때, 대상이 특정 단체의 군사로 자라날까 싶은 노파심에 특정 교재보다 대상자의 신앙 성숙도와 처한 상황에 따라, 성경을 중심으로 말씀을 나누었다.

오랜만에, 이전 공동체에서 함께 활동했던 집사님을 만나게 되었다. 내가 선교단체로 인도받아 활동한다고 하자, 집사님의 눈빛이 묘하게 변하는 것을 보았다. 나는 그 눈빛의 의미를 바로 알 수 있었다. 이 시대를 향한 복음의 소명이 함께 몸담았던 공동체에 있다고 믿는 그분에게, 나는 하나님의 진정한 소명을 벗어나 길 잃고 떠도는 어린양처럼 보이기에 비치는 눈빛이었다.

하나님의 나라는 창조의 목적과 존재의 본질이 실현되는 공간으로 주님은 오묘한 은총으로 다양한 인생과 공동체를 통해 일을 행하시고 성취하신다. 소속 교단이나 교리가 다르다고 함께 영적 전장에서 자신의 등 뒤를 지켜줄 전우를 가엾게 여기거나, 잘못된 길을 행한다고 단정하지 말자.

나는 '교회를 섬긴다.', '목사님을 섬긴다'라는 표현을 즐겨 사용하지 않는다. 성경이 교회를 '그리스도의 몸'이라 부른 데에 근거하여, 섬김이 곧 예수님을 향한 헌신을 의미하는 표현이지만, 일부 믿음에 연약한 신자들이 공동체에 대한 지나친 소속감과 우월감으로 우상숭배에 빠지지 않을까 우려가 된다.

이는 구약 시대에 여호와께서 이스라엘 백성에게 성령으로 직접 임재하지 않으시고, 지도자를 통해 말씀하시고 역사하셨기 때문에, 모세가 산에서 내려옴이 더딤으로 불안에 휩싸인 백성들이 아론에게 강권하여 송아지 형상을 만들게 한 사건과 맥락을 같이한다.

송아지 형상을 향하여 "이스라엘아, 이는 너희를 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 낸 너희의 신이로다"라고 외치는 이스라엘 백성과 아론의 무지함이 오늘날 영적 권위에 맹목적인 일부 신자에게 이정표가 되기를 바란다.

To strengthen the gospel capacity of fellow believers, whenever a well-known program came along I joined retreats and training sessions at my pastor's recommendation, and I have also taken part in training programs run by mission organizations. All of them were designed to help believers practice their faith according to Jesus' teachings and live as mature Christians. Each, however, has its own distinctive emphasis -- some specialize in meditating on the Word and prayer, while others focus on evangelism and missions.

Each ministry community commonly stresses that taking part in their work is itself a chosen response and calling to God's summons for this generation. It is understandable to emphasize conviction about one's ministry in order to strengthen members' sense of belonging, but if that emphasis is taken too far, it can slide past healthy pride into the error of being consumed by an arrogant sense of superiority -- as if only our group has received the calling for this age.

When I share the Word, out of concern that the listener might grow up only as a soldier of one particular organization, I have shared the message centered on the Bible itself rather than on a specific curriculum, adapting to the listener's spiritual maturity and circumstances.

After a long while, I happened to meet a deacon with whom I used to serve in a previous community. When I told him I had been led to a mission organization and was now active there, I noticed his eyes change in a strange way. I could immediately read what that look meant. To him -- one who believes that the gospel calling for this age belongs to the community we once shared -- I appeared like a lost lamb wandering off from God's true calling.

The kingdom of God is the space in which the purpose of creation and the essence of being are fulfilled, and the Lord, in His mysterious grace, works and accomplishes His will through diverse lives and communities.

Let us not pity, or condemn as wayward, a comrade who would guard our back on the spiritual battlefield simply because his denomination or doctrine differs from ours.

I do not like to use expressions such as "serving the church" or "serving the pastor." Based on the Bible's calling the church "the body of Christ," such expressions can indeed mean devotion to Jesus Himself, but I worry that some weaker believers may fall into idolatry through an excessive sense of belonging and superiority toward their community.

This connects with an Old Testament event: because in those days the LORD did not directly indwell the people of Israel by the Holy Spirit, but spoke and worked through leaders, the people grew anxious when Moses delayed in coming down from the mountain and pressed Aaron to make the calf-image. May the ignorance of Israel and Aaron -- who cried out before the calf-image, "O Israel, this is your god, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt" -- serve today as a signpost to those believers who blindly follow spiritual authority.
