대한민국을 대표하는 사업가 중 한 분이신 삼성그룹 고(故) 이병철 회장께서 타계하기 한 달 전 천주교 신부에게 내밀었던 종교적 24가지 질문이 있다고 한다.

그 첫째 질문이 "신(神)이 존재한다면 왜 자신을 드러내지 않는가?"라는 것이다. 오늘 이 질문에 대한 답을 세상과 후대에 고해보고자 한다.

하나님은 태초부터 자신을 드러내셨다. 자연의 아름다움을 통해 선하심을, 자연의 무서움을 통해 분노하심을 드러내셨다. 하나님은 저 궁창(穹蒼)에 있는 은하수와 수 많은 별들을 통해 당신의 무한함을 드러내셨다.

하나님은 구약 시대, 선택받은 사람들을 통해 자신을 드러내셨으며, 죄로 인해 잃어버린 관계를 회복하시겠다는 약속 또한 드러내셨다. 하나님은 신약 시대, 예수 그리스도의 십자가의 대속을 통해 세상을 이처럼 사랑하심을 드러내셨다.

하나님은 오순절 날, 모든 나라와 민족에게 자신을 드러내시고자 성령님의 임재를 기도하는 제자들에게 당신의 영광을 드러내셨다. 그리고, 현재 부족하고 부족한 나를 통해서도 당신에게 하나님의 존재를 드러내고 계신다.

하나님은 태초부터 지금까지 어느 한순간도 자신을 드러내시지 않은 적이 없다. 그분이 침묵하신 것이 아니라 우리가 그 계시와 말씀에 눈이 어둡고 영이 무디어 인식하지 못할 뿐이다. 이런 우리에게 하나님은 인격화된 신으로서 당신에게 증명되고 싶어 하신다. 당신이 생각하는 그 이상으로 하나님은 당신에게 증명되고 싶어 하신다. 오늘 그 길을 하나하나 살펴보자.

하나님을 만나지 못하는 것은 당신이 부족해서, 당신이 연약해서, 당신이 악해서도 아니다. 인정되지 않겠지만, 이는 '원죄'라는 존재, 즉 태초의 하나님과의 관계가 절연되는 파괴적인 근원의 문제이기 때문이다. 이 '원죄'의 해결을 위해 하나님은 메시야를 약속하셨고 그 약속대로 예수는 메시야로서 십자가에서 그 죄를 대속하셨다. 성경은 이 약속의 문장으로 채워졌다.

나의 성이 박씨인 것은 내가 부족해서, 연약해서, 악해서도 아닌, 단지 그 '혈족'의 굴레 안에 속해있기 때문이다. 하나님은 증명하고 싶어 하신다. '원죄'로 파괴된 당신과의 관계 회복을 위해 하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 예수를 메시야로 십자가에 피 흘리게 하신 그 사랑을 증명하고 싶어 하신다.

당신이 복음을 듣거나 성경을 읽을 때 그 진의가 안개처럼 잡히지 않고, 여러 번 곱씹어봐도 가시지 않는 수수께기 같은 그 말씀의 한 글자, 한 문장, 한 문단, 한 페이지마다 하나님은 말씀으로 살아서, 운동(運動)하여 당신에게 증명되고 싶어 하신다. 자신의 존재를 드러내어 증명하고 싶어 하시는 하나님을 만나고 싶은가? 그렇다면, 우선 이런 하나님의 드러나고자 하는 속성을 당신의 인식 체계 안에 내면화하자. 그리고, 저 닿을 수 없는 거리에서 들려오는 공허한 음절 같은 그분의 드러남의 외침을, 당신 자신의 삶 속에 수용하고자 하는 갈망의 씨앗을 마음에 심자.

당신이 삶 속에서 가장 가치있게 여기는 것은 무엇인가? 매슬로우 관점의 자아실현인가? 현대의 치열한 경쟁 속에서 안정감을 취할 수 있는 관계적 가치인가? 어떤 가치도 우리의 언어로 표현되기에 무리가 없다. 그러나, 하나님은 당신과의 만남을 통해 파괴되었던 관계가 회복되어 자신의 존재가 드러나는 것에 최고의 가치를 두셨다. 이를 우리의 언어로 표현할 길이 없어, 성경은 그것을 '이처럼'이라는 부사로 나타내셨다.

It is said that the late Chairman Lee Byung-chul of Samsung Group, one of Korea's most prominent businessmen, presented twenty-four religious questions to a Catholic priest a month before his passing.

The first of those questions was, "If God exists, why does He not reveal Himself?" Today I would like to offer, before the world and before generations to come, an answer to this question.

From the very beginning, God has been revealing Himself. Through the beauty of nature He has shown His goodness, and through the terror of nature He has shown His wrath. God has revealed His infinity through the Milky Way and the countless stars in the vast firmament.

In the Old Testament era, God revealed Himself through chosen people, and He also revealed His promise to restore the relationship lost through sin. In the New Testament era, through the atonement of Jesus Christ on the cross, He revealed how greatly He loved the world.

On the day of Pentecost, in order to reveal Himself to every nation and people, God poured out His glory upon the disciples who were praying for the presence of the Holy Spirit. And even now, through one as lacking as I am, He is revealing the existence of God to you.

From the beginning until now, there has not been a single moment when God has not revealed Himself. It is not that He has been silent, but that we, with eyes blinded and spirits dulled to His revelation and His Word, simply fail to recognize it. To us in this state, God, as a personal God, longs to be proven to you. Far more than you might imagine, God longs to be proven to you. Today, let us trace that path step by step.

Failing to meet God is not because you are lacking, not because you are weak, and not because you are evil. Though it may not be easy to accept, it is because of the existence called "original sin" -- the destructive root issue that severed the original relationship with God in the beginning. To resolve this "original sin," God promised the Messiah, and according to that promise, Jesus, as the Messiah, atoned for that sin upon the cross. The Bible is filled from end to end with the sentences of this promise.

My surname being Park is not because I am lacking, weak, or evil; it is simply because I belong within the bond of that "bloodline." God longs to prove Himself. To restore the relationship with you that was destroyed by "original sin," God longs to prove the love by which He so loved the world that He had Jesus, the Messiah, shed His blood on the cross.

When you hear the gospel or read the Bible, and its true meaning seems to slip through your fingers like fog, when even after chewing on it many times the riddle does not dissolve -- in every single letter, sentence, paragraph, and page of that Word, God, alive and active in His Word, longs to prove Himself to you. Do you wish to meet the God who longs to reveal Himself and prove His existence? Then first, internalize this self-revealing nature of God within your framework of understanding. And in your heart, plant the seed of longing -- a longing to receive into your own life that cry of His self-revelation, which from an unreachable distance can sound like nothing more than empty syllables.

What do you treasure most in your life? Self-actualization in Maslow's sense? A relational value through which you can find stability amid the fierce competition of modern life? Any of these values can be expressed in our language without difficulty. Yet God placed the highest value on this: that through an encounter with you, the relationship that had been destroyed would be restored, and His own existence would be revealed. Because there is no way to express this in our language, the Bible expresses it with the adverb "so."
